The legal requirement

Under current UK and EU transport law, bus, coach, and large goods vehicle operators must hold a valid Operator’s Licence (“O Licence”).
To obtain or maintain that licence, they must show that they are professionally competent , either personally or through employing a qualified Transport Manager.

An individual can only be deemed professionally competent once they have passed the Road Haulage Transport Manager CPC examination, which is set and approved by the Education & Skills Group on behalf of the Department for Transport.

Skills Bootcamps in Transport: Your Route to Becoming an HGV/LGV , Coach, Bus or Minibus Driver.

Have you ever thought about becoming an HGV/LGV, Coach, Bus or Minibus Driver? Whether you're looking for a career change, a fresh start, or simply love working with people, our Skills Bootcamp in Transport could be your ticket to a new profession - and the Government fully funds it through Wiltshire, Somerset & Dorset Council.

What is the Skills Bootcamp in Transport?

This Government-funded Skills Bootcamp is designed to help you gain your LGV/HGV and PCV (Passenger Carrying Vehicle) licence - also known as a Category C, C+E, D or D1 licence, which qualifies you to drive an LGV /HGV, bus, coach, or minibus. Our Skills Bootcamp is open to residents of Wiltshire, Somerset & Dorset who meet the following criteria:

- Aged 19 or over
- Lived in the UK for at least 3 years
- Looking for a job that uses the license you will earn through the programme

This programme is all about getting you into employment, and we'll support you every step of the way.

Up-skilling existing staff through Skills Bootcamp in Transport

Skills Bootcamp in Transport isn’t just for individuals starting fresh - they’re also ideal for employers looking to up-skill their current workforce:

- Organisations with fewer than 250 employees can co-fund just 10% of the training cost.
- Those with 250 or more employees co-fund 30%.
- For individuals entering the workforce or changing careers, the programme is completely free.

We also help job seekers find work after completing the programme - job support is a core part of every Skills Bootcamp in Transport.

What Will You Learn?

The training takes place over approximately 16 weeks, including three classroom days, theory test support, and five days of practical driver training with a test on the final day.

Our three classroom training days ( NOW also available online during the evenings and weekends ) cover vital topics including:

- Driver wellness and mental health
- Safeguarding and the Prevent strategy

- Driver hours and tachograph rules
- Safe vehicle loading / passenger safety
- Emergency First Aid at the scene
- Preparing for your theory test
- Interview skills and CV writing

These sessions are designed to give you the confidence, knowledge, and skills you need to become a safe, professional driver - and to help you succeed in interviews and get hired.

Step-by-Step Support from Start to Finish

We're with you all the way:

1. Apply: Fill out a simple application form (we can help you do this).
2. Medical: We'll help you arrange your medical assessment.
3. Provisional Licence: We'll assist you with the paperwork to apply.
4. Theory Test: We'll book it for you and guide you in your preparation.
5. Classroom / Online Learning: Learn key knowledge and job-seeking skills, including digital skills.
6. Driver Training: Five full days of practical training starting from Frome, Bristol, Swindon or Keynsham, with your test on the final day.
